How a Forward-Thinking Southern Utah Community Prioritizes Pavement Preservation with HA5
Good infrastructure isn’t a nice-to-have; it’s a must. In Kayenta, a beautiful desert community in Southern Utah with approximately 250 homes, having high-quality infrastructure was a necessity to support residents and enhance their property values.
The Problem
After previous asphalt preservation treatments proved ineffective in maintaining the quality of its roads, the Kayenta Community recognized the need for a more long-lasting and durable solution. However, after seeing unsatisfactory results in nearby subdivisions that applied a chip seal, community board members began researching other options.
The Solution
After thorough research and side-by-side comparisons, the community decided to apply HA5 High Density Mineral Bond to its roads. HA5 was chosen based on its superior performance, longevity, and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional slurry seals.
The Infrastructure Challenges of Kayenta Community
Located in the stunning red rock landscape of Southern Utah, the Kayenta Community is as beautiful as it is unique. The community is located near the town of Ivins, just outside of St. George, and is well known for its dramatic desert vistas, rugged terrain, and a blend of modern living with a deep respect for the natural environment. One of the biggest goals of the community is to promote a balanced lifestyle that embraces nature, art, diversity, and sustainability.
But as picturesque as it is, the area has significant infrastructure challenges, especially when it comes to maintaining its roads.
The climate in Southern Utah is extreme with hot summers, cold winters, and little moisture. While this makes for breathtaking scenery, it also takes a toll on the roadways. Asphalt can crack and deteriorate quickly due to the intense temperature swings and the abrasive nature of the desert environment.
For a community like Kayenta, where many of the homes and businesses are located miles apart, a reliable road system is more than just a convenience — it’s essential. Roy Wennerholm, road manager for Kayenta, said, “We were very anxious to make sure that the infrastructure that supports us and our homes is the best we can get.”
Historically, the community’s traditional approach to pavement preservation, seal coating, was effective in the short term, but often failed in the long term. This methods quickly became costly and didn’t offer the long-term durability Kayenta needed. So, the community began searching for a better solution — something that would extend the lifespan of its roads and hold up against the unique challenges of the area.

How HA5 Solved Kayenta’s Pavement Preservation Challenges
Rather than going back to ineffective traditional asphalt preservation methods, Kayenta Community conducted careful research and decided to test a newer, more innovative solution: HA5 High Density Mineral Bond.
To make an informed choice, Roy described how the community conducted a side-by-side comparison of HA5 against slurry seals. “We actually had the opportunity to see the mineral bond streets and the slurry sealed streets adjacent to each other,” Roy said. “It was very clear to us that the mineral bond was a superior product.”
One major benefit of applying HA5 was its minimal disruption to the community. Kayenta is a tight-knit area, and residents rely on the roads for daily commutes and leisure activities. Previous surface treatments didn’t last very long, meaning the community would need to reapply them frequently to see any benefit. This led to frequent disruptions in the community. HA5, however, is a much longer lasting solution, which means residents can receive the benefits of extending asphalt life without the frequent disruptions.
The results of HA5 speak for themselves. Since applying HA5 in 2015, the roads have maintained their pristine appearance, resisting the damage that results from asphalt oxidation. The real payoff, however, is in the long-term impacts that have proven to be a smart investment for Kayenta. “Based on the studies we’ve done and compared to alternate surfaces, we find that [HA5] is going to save us, over the next ten years, probably half a million dollars, at least,” Roy said.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway in Kayenta since applying HA5 is increased resident satisfaction. “Most of the people here are retired,” Roy explained. “These homes are relatively expensive. We want to make sure our infrastructure supports not only what we have but will last for a long time.” Roy described how HA5 provided exactly what Kayenta was looking for, with everybody being “very pleased with the result.”
HA5 Boosts Kayenta Resident Satisfaction and Lowers Costs
Implementing HA5 High Density Mineral Bond was a game-changer for the Kayenta Community. Not only did it dramatically improve the quality of the roads, but it also extended the life of the infrastructure — saving the community significant costs in the process.
By partnering with Holbrook Asphalt, the entire process was seamless. Clayton Fulton, assistant community manager said: “I don’t think we’ll ever use another product other than HA5. Our residents are very happy with the roads, and they look brand new even years after application.”
