bonded matrix overlay

REHABILITATE AND PRESERVE YOUR MOST VALUABLE ASSET.

Bulletproof Durability. High Friction. Elevated Public Acceptance

Bonded Matrix Overlay (BMO) effectively extends the useful life of collector and residential roadways. The impermeable barrier protects the underlying asphalt beneath a rugged aggregate wearing course bonded and encapsulated with leading preservation technology. The effective solution for heavier trafficked and even distressed roadways, resulting in longer lasting roads and reduced financial burdens for taxpayers.

What is Bonded Matrix Overlay (BMO)?

Bonded Matrix Overlay is a flexible asphalt preservation system designed to fuse intense bonding and sealing capabilities with a matrix voided aggregate layer. The technology integrates a beneficial macrotexture surface coupled with an impermeable barrier that can even be used on roads in “less than” good condition and/or roads that are higher in traffic speeds and loads. Moving beyond what has traditionally been available for roads with a lower Pavement Condition Index (PCI), Bonded Matrix Overlay gives the durability, texture, and aesthetics without the negative side effects and performance barriers previously available for roads requiring an aggressive maintenance strategy.

By defending against environmental intrusions and traffic loads that shorten pavement life, the system’s specialized aggregate layer facilitates capillary bonding between the binding agent and the impermeable matrix layer. The result is longer-lasting roadway assets with lower ownership costs.

Bonded Matrix Overlay features include:

  • Durable macrotexture surface for improved friction and safety
  • Impermeable barrier that resists water intrusion and oxidative damage
  • Resistance to deterioration even under moderate to higher traffic loads

When To Use Bonded Matrix Overlay

Roads in Good to Fair Condition

The most proactive agencies use Bonded Matrix Overlay early in the life of higher trafficked roadways to ensure the maximum lifespan out of their pavement asset investments.

Others, seeking the most effective solution for roads that are no longer in “good” condition, but don’t yet need structural repair, turn to Bonded Matrix Overlay. If your pavement shows surface cracking, oxidation, or wear but the base remains sound, Bonded Matrix Overlay extends service life and postpones costly rehabilitation or reconstruction.

Residential Roads with Lower PCI Scores

When the PCI score of residential streets falls below 70, treatment options become limited. In many circumstances, microsurface and chip seals can be unpopular due to limited performance benefits or the loathed loose aggregate post installation. Bonded Matrix Overlay provides extended protection and a desirable, durable surface that residents embrace.

Climates with Intense UV and Moiusture

UV radiation and water infiltration are the primary drivers of pavement deterioration. Bonded Matrix Overlay’s impermeable barrier blocks moisture and shields against UV degradation. In challenging climates where roads age rapidly, Bonded Matrix Overlay provides extended performance compared to conventional surface treatments with an enhanced aggregate-layer wearing course.

Public Works Leaders Who Trust Bonded Matrix Overlay

Agency Insights: Engineering & Public Works Joint Plan for Effective Asset Management

Jon Rueckert, Public Works Director, and Karyn Baxter, City Engineer, for the City of North Salt Lake, share how their city revolutionized pavement preservation over the past 18 years. Starting with a small test project in the city hall parking lot, it led to citywide adoption of Bonded Matrix Overlay, which became a game-changer for their budget and road quality.

Real-World Performance

Bonded Matrix Overlay delivers proven preservation performance by forming a durable, impermeable surface that protects pavement from water intrusion, environmental aging, as well as traffic loads. This system has demonstrated extended service life in municipal applications with real-world performance validating its effectiveness.

Bonded Matrix Overlay was not made generally available to agencies until the earliest installation, which experienced intense traffic combined with a challenging climate environment, reached its tenth year of service and was found to still be providing exceptional preservation performance. Numerous additional installations in varying conditions are continuing to perform to the high expectations of the system.
